Jesus shared hope, even while dying

Whether or not you commemorated today with some fried fish, here’s a meditation for a Good Friday …

Some of the most beautiful words spoken by Jesus during his time on earth are recorded in Luke 23:43:

“Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Jesus said that to the criminal hanging on a cross next to him as they were both dying.

Think of those criminals. If Jesus were crucified today, those criminals next to him would be terrorists — heartless men who kill innocent people for crazy reasons. Very bad men who are finally caught, sentenced and executed in a publicly humiliating way. Jesus’ crime was treason.

The criminal to whom Jesus was speaking was doing a decent job of witnessing to the second criminal who was making fun of Jesus: “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

The “good thief” rebuked him, saying they, at least, were receiving due rewards for their deeds, “but this man has done nothing…
